Patch management is a disciplined approach to the acquisition, testing, and implementation of OS and application patches and requires a fair amount of resources to implement properly To implement patch management effectively, you must first have a good inventory of the software used in your environment, including all OSs and applications Then you must set up a process to monitor for updates to those software packages Many vendors provide the ability to update their products automatically or automatically check for updates and inform the user when updates are available For example, Microsoft s Automatic Updates, shown in Figure 12-16, allows the user to configure for completely automatic updates on a scheduled basis, download new updates but let the user choose when to install them, or notify the user when updates are available Some vendors provide notification of patches and some vendors provide a service that will alert you when patches that apply to your environment are available Keeping track of patch availability is merely the first step; in many environments, patches must be analyzed and tested Does the patch apply to the software you are running Does the patch address a vulnerability or critical issue that must be addressed immediately What is the impact of applying that patch or group of patches Will it break something else if you apply this patch To address these issues, some organizations use development or test platforms where patches are carefully analyzed and tested

Figure 23-11: Frame Relay network with two VCs applied to a single physical interface The second scenario involves keeping split horizon enabled and adding access list statements that filter bad routes out of updates entering each remote router At each remote router, you would add a filter for each network to which the router is directly connected For instance, in the previous example, you would need to filter out incoming updates for the 19216810 and 1721600 networks on Marty, to keep any bogus routes for these networks from entering Marty's routing table Note If you are using multipoint subinterfaces, route filtering is almost a necessity to avoid routing loops The final solution is to just reconfigure the router to use subinterfaces for each VC This solution is typically the easiest, and is covered in detail in 22 One way or another, enabling and disabling split horizon is as easy as entering the ip splithorizon (to enable split horizon) or no ip split-horizon command in interface config mode for each particular interface To perform filtering on an interface, you must perform two basic tasks: 1 Configure one or more access lists to match the update entries (networks) that you wish to remove from updates 2 Configure an incoming or outgoing distribute list to use the access list Again, access lists are covered in 27, so I won't discuss the first step here Once the access list is configured, use the distribute-list [access list] [in | out] [(optional) interface type and number] router configuration command to apply the filter either globally (by not specifying an interface) or to a specific interface The [in | out] parameter is used to specify whether the filter should be applied to incoming updates or outgoing updates When applying the list to an outgoing update, you may also specify that the update apply to a specific routing protocol and autonomous system (AS) by appending the protocol and AS number to the end of the statement (discussed further in the next chapter).
